What is IIT-JEE Exam?

 

Joint entrance examination (JEE) is a national level entrance exam held by the National Testing Agency(NTA). It conducted for those aspiring students who are seeking admission in the top engineering colleges in India. It includes two different examinations: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. These exams are the gateway for the aspiring students who are seeking admission in Indian Institute of Technology (IITs), National Institute of Technology(NITs), Government Funded Technical Institues (GFTIs) and other recognized institutes in the country.

 

JEE Main Exam

 

Candidates who qualify the Formerly known as All India Engineering Entrance Examination (AIEEE), JEE Main exam shall be eligible to appear for the JEE Advanced exam. The former is managed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and the latter by the IITs on a rotational basis. JEE Mains takes place twice a year in January and April, giving the students ample time to prepare for the next attempt if they give the first attempt in April. JEE Advanced is scheduled in May. A candidate is eligible to give 6 attempts.

 

 

JEE Main Exam Eligibility

  • Candidates who are appearing for the JEE Main Exam must qualify the below criteria to be eligible for the exam.
  • Candidate must be a citizen of India, Person of Indian Origin (PIOs)/ Overseas Citizen of India (OCIs).
  • Candidate should have passed 12th class/equivalent qualifying exam the same year or two years prior.
  • Physics and Mathematics as core subjects of total 5 subjects are required subjects in the qualifying exam.
  • Any diploma holder can apply for the JEE Main exam. The rank /score will not be considered for admission in CFTIs or NITs.
  • A minimum of 75% for general category candidates in the 12th board exams or top 20 percentile in their qualifying examination.
  • 65% marks are required for reserved category candidates to get admission in IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs.

JEE Main Paper - 1 Marking Scheme

  • For each right answer, 4 marks will be given while 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • For numerical based questions, 4 marks will be given for the right answer and no negative marking for the wrong answer.
  • No marks would be given for unattended questions.

JEE Main Paper - 3 Marking Scheme

  • For each right answer, 4 marks will be given while 1 mark will be deducted for every wrong answer.
  • For every correct numerical based question, 4 marks will be given and there is no negative marking.

JEE Advanced Exam

JEE Advanced Exam is another national level exam that is conducted every year mainly for the students who are seeking admissions for the engineering courses in IIT colleges. Students who are among the 2,50,000 AIR holders from JEE mains are only eligible to apply for JEE Advanced Exam. It is the second phase of the JE Exam after JEE Main.

JEE Advanced Exam Eligibility

  • Candidates should have passed 12th class/equivalent qualifying exam the same year or two years prior.
  • Candidates who fall under the list of top 2,50,000 holders are only eligible to appear for JEE Advanced exam.
  • Minimum marks in qualifying the exam must be 75% aggregate or top 20 percentile of the respective board.
  • Candidates are only allowed to attempt twice.

JEE Advanced Marking Scheme

  • 4 marks will be given if all responses are correct in one or more correct options questions.
  • For partially correct answer,+3,+2,+1 marks will be given.
  • For the wrong answer, -2 shall be deducted.
  • No negative marking for unanswered questions.

Frequently Asked Questions On JEE Main & Advanced 2021

1. What are the major differences between JEE Main or JEE Advanced?

JEE Main exam is the basic national level exam that is conducted for the candidates who are seeking admission in the top engineering colleges of India that includes IIT’s, NTI’s and GFTIs. It assesses the candidate only on the basis of class 11 and 12 whereas JEE advanced exam is mainly conducted for the admissions into IIT colleges in India and the candidates who clear the JEE Main are only eligible for the JEE advanced. JEE advanced exam is considered to be more difficult than the JEE Main exam as it also assesses the problem-solving skills of the candidates.

2. How can I apply for IIITs, NITs, and GFTIs?

Candidates should have passed class 12th with a minimum of 75% from the science stream with maths or should rank among the top 20 percentile in the qualifying exam.

3. Which books should I refer for JEE Main Exam?

Referring to NCERT books is very important while you are preparing for the JEE Main exam as most of the syllabus is covered from the NCERT Textbooks. 

4. How to get admission to IIT?

Candidates must clear the JEE Main exam to get admission into IITs, NTI’s and GFTIs. While for admission into IIT colleges, it is mandatory for the candidates to clear the JEE Advanced exam. Candidates who clear the JEE Main exam are only eligible to apply for JEE Advanced exam.

5. How many attempts are allowed for JEE Main?

JEE Main exam is conducted by NTA twice a year. The total number of times students can appear for the JEE Main exam is six in three consecutive years from the year of passing their 12th class.

6. Is it compulsory to appear twice for the JEE Main exam?

No. It totally depends on the choice of the candidate. They can appear for either one or both the attempts. The greater of the two scores would be taken into account if they appear for both exams.

7. Is the syllabus of JEE Main and JEE Advanced different?

To some extent, there are some similarities in the JEE Main and Advanced exams. However, there are certain differences in the topics that you may not find similar. Some of the topics for the JEE Advanced exam are completely different from JEE Main.

8. Are there any changes in the JEE Main 2021 exam pattern?

Yes, there are some changes that are made in the JEE Main exam pattern. JEE Main 2021 paper 1 will have a total number of 75 questions from the subject Physics, Chemistry, and Maths. Each subject would have 20 MCQs and 5 numerical questions.
